ASPHALT - DEVELOPMENTS IN DRAINAGE ASPHALT

This paper describes the properties of drainage asphalt, which make it an appropriate material for road surfaces under many circumstances. It has been used since 1983 for the construction of all categories of roads, following successful road trials conducted between 1979 and 1981. Drainage asphalt, otherwise known as open-graded asphalt, has a stone content of about 83% by mass, compared with 35% to 56% in a dense asphalt. Drainage asphalt has a void content of about 20%, and its interconnected voids allow it to absorb and channel considerable quantities of rain water. Some extracts are given from Belgian ministry of public works circular no a-169-86/04000, which details the specifications for drainage asphalt; it covers many aspects of its manufacture, application, and use, and specifies what can and cannot be tolerated when constructing drainage asphalt roads. The advantages of drainage asphalt include: (1) reduction in the amount of spray from vehicle tyres; (2) improvement of night visibility; (3) diminution of rolling noise from tyres; (4) reduction of penetration of ground water under pressure.
