COUPLING ARTICS. IRTE CODE OF PRACTICE
This code of practice for articulated vehicles aims at broadening the scope of tractor-trailer interchangeability to embrace existing trailers used in the United Kingdom as well as new ones. Coupling code dimensions are specified, as well as fifth wheel position and height, vertical and horizontal swing clearances. Included in these specifications are: a) target standard coupling heights for tractors and semi-trailers, b) recommended trailer-neck profile, c) coupled clearances between tractor and trailer; d) limits on tractor tail swing and vertical articulation angle; e) length limit; f) maximun cab depth at roof level; g) recommended mounting height for brake and electrical connections; and h) maximum king-pin loadings. A method for calculating weight distribution is also provided.
