DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF HIGHWAY SPEED WEIGH IN MOTION SYSTEMS IN AUSTRALIA
Weigh in motion or wim is the term used to describe the technology involved in the automatic and unobstrusive monitoring of the dynamic loads produced by heavy vehicles in a traffic stream. This report documents the development and evaluation of an arrb wim system known as the highway speed electronic mass unit (hsemu) which is of the plate in ground type. It goes on then to evaluate other systems of this type along with a set of strain gauge transducer systems. The performance and operation of each system is covered in some detail. In all six systems were evaluated. Of these, five performed similarly and estimate gross vehicle mass within plus or minus 10 per cent and individual axle mass within plus or minus 15 per cent. The sixth, a capacitive pad system, performed less accurately with comparable figures of plus or minus 18 per cent and plus or minus 34 per cent.
