DURABILITY OF GEOTEXTILES: THE FRENCH EXPERIENCE
Tests concerning the durability of geotextiles, conducted in France, have been carried out on materials which have been in the ground for 5-10 yrs. The types of structure in which they were placed were fills on compressible soil, access roads, pavement foundation layers, drainage systems and dams. The article describes the steps taken in the tests in the identification of location, the measurements taken, and the interpretation of results. Although the tests confirmed other findings, in that no time dependent chemical or biological evolution was observed so far in natural soils, sampling and further tests are necessary to obtain information on a longer time scale.
