BUS SERVICES ON MERSEYSIDE IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS

This paper summarises the impact of deregulation in the Merseyside area between the transitional period and the present day, with particular reference to six study areas (aigburth/garston/speke; croxteth/stockbridge village; crosby; maghull/lydiate; kirby, and formby). Services are still changing rapidly and there is little stability in the market. As a result patronage has fallen dramatically, possibly due to further increases in fares. However bus mileage is now marginally greater than before deregulation. There are considerable reductions in the level of subsidy required. There are more bus operators and there has been some innovation in the form of minibus services, particularly in areas where North western dominate. There has however, been only limited competition between operators. The short duration of contracts may have inhibited entry into this sector. There are traces of some competition beginning to emerge as two independent operators move into areas traditionally controlled by the incumbent operator, merseybus.
