DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENTS IN STEEL TANKS. DISCUSSION

This is a discussion of a paper of this title by T.B. D'Orazio and J.M. Duncan published in Volume 113 No. 9 (September 1987) of this jounal. The discusser Fenske presents information that he believes will negate some conclusions reached by the authors. It is noted that standard settlement computations will show an inherent dish-shaped settlement for uniform soil conditions. The effects of tank-bottom settlement are discussed. Tanks can be completed successfully under marginal foundation conditions if the initial loading is made with a controlled water test. The discusser Horvath notes the importance of the mode of deformation called 'floor humping', more precisely defined as an upward defelection or buckling of the bottom plate (and concommitant localized loss of subgrade support) within a region close, typically on the order of 10 feet, to the shell. The direct failure mechanism and 'edge cutting' of the shell are discussed. The discussions are followed by a closure by the authors.
