EFFECT OF GROUND CONDITION ON DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF EMBANKMENT

Earthquake-induced big deformations of embankments, etc., are liable to occur in the grounds where the surface of a bed rock under a soft soil stratum is inclined. In order to investigate the response behavior of embankments on these grounds and to develop a method for examining the structure of these grounds, dynamic analyses of embankments on these grounds have been done by inputting two kinds of earthquake waves from the ground bottom. The results are as follows: (1) Responses are largely influenced by the frequency characteristics of the input wave; (2) when the bed rock surface is inclined, the response of the right side and that of the left side of an embankment differ from each other; (3) the influence of input wave characteristics on the ratio of Fourier spectra of vibrational waves is comparatively small; on the contrary, the effect of ground structure is significantly large.
