HUMAN ERROR IN STRUCTURAL DESIGN TASKS
The design process and the errors that might occur in the execution of a typical design are described. From this it is hoped to develop an understanding of the reasons for error occurrence, its frequency, and measures for its prevention. This could lead to the development of a mathematical model of error occurrence, its structural effects, and its control. The paper describes the effect of human error on structural reliability, and gives data on microtask error rates. These are incorporated in a decision-tree model for a typical design macrotask. It was found that there was reasonable agreement between survey results for the macrotask and the simulated results.
