RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN OF WOOD STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
It is important in the reliability assessment of light frame wood structures, that because of the large variability in the mechanical properties of wood, the analysis must focus on the whole system rather than just a single structural element. In order to achieve target reliability at the system level, a procedure is presented for calibrating the system modification factor, through the examination of the ultimate limit state bending performance of single members and multiple member systems. This calibration procedure takes account of the plate action of the sheathing, the nongrid connection between the sheathing and the joists, and the variability in the mechanical properties of the system. Only simple supported systems under uniformly distributed short-term transverse loading conditions were considered. It was found that system modification factors depend on the probability distribution properties of the members and the loading, as well as the differences between the structural behavior of single beams and complete systems. A method for computing this system modificatiion factor using first order reliability methods is presented. Two different approaches to reliabillity assessment are discussed.
