LINKING CIVIL ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DRAFTING SOFTWARE VIA IGES
A methodology is described which serves as a general model for accomplishing the link between independently maintained design and drafting software. The model has been implemented in the microcomputer environment using a reinforced concrete box culvert design program: BRASS-CULVERT. A processor has been written that produces detail drawings of the culvert design automatically. These drawings are generated in a data format that can be utilized by a wide variety of CAD systems. The drawing files are generated using the Initial Graphics Exchange Specifications (IGES), a neutral drawing file data format that can be utilized by a variety of CAD systems. The BRASS-CULVERT model has been demonstrated on several different CAD systems, and an example of the results is presented. Guidelines are also given for implementing the methodology into other design applications.
