REDECKING THE BRAGA BRIDGE--A DIFFICULT JOB

Rehabilitating the Charles Braga, Jr., Memorial Bridge was a challenge to the Massachusetts Department of Public Works. The design engineers, contractors and highway officials carefully coordinated the program over two construction seasons. While such projects on navigated waterways are generally among the most difficult of public works projects, this undertaking had the added challenges of maintaining traffic during construction, high winds, and working around a fleet of retired warships anchored as a tourist attraction beneath one end of the bridge. This article describes the $37.9 million rehabilitation program which was completed 18 days ahead of the final deadline.
