PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR SNOWMOBILE LIGHTING SYSTEMS
The present report summarizes an experimental study undertaken with the objective of defining performance requirements for snowmobile headlamp systems related to the collision avoidance capabilities of this type of vehicle. Field measurements of seeing distances with various alternative headlamp systems were supported by photometric analyses of the headlamp output. While it did not prove possible to define comprehensive performance requirements, a number of specific conclusions were reached. In particular, the major importance of headlamp mounting height and the need for a controlled voltage supply to the headlamp were demonstrated.
