ENVIRONMENT OR LOAD: WHICH AFFECTS LIFE MOST?

In an effort to find out what damages roads, pairs of pavement sections at 14 locations in five states were examined. At each location one section received normal traffic and the other had never been opened, allowing evaluation of environmental versus load damage. It was found that in freeze-related regions, where environmental stress is expected to be greater, load damage is also greater. Wet pavements also responded poorly to loads. Further details of the study are presented in this article.
