COMPUTERS SLASH WEEKS FROM I-595 SCHEDULE
Coordination of the $1.2-billion I-595 Port Everglades Expressway Project in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was accomplished with the help of new project management software. The microprocessor-driven system allowed managers to look closely at the project's details and cut several contracts' durations as much as a year. Better contract change processing also slashed approval time by 10 weeks. The I-595 Expressway in Broward County, Florida, is 13.4 miles of urban highway peppered with multilevel interchanges, including three four-level interchanges. More than 15 million cu. yd. of embankment will be placed along more than 300 lane miles or roadway. Ninety-three bridges are planned for the six-year project. The management challenge was to plan construction sequences, monitor progress and costs, track shop-drawing reviews, and manage contract changes and cost/delay claim analysis to keep the project on schedule.
