BETTER WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT
The biggest problems in managing a highway maintenance department are finding and keeping competent workers for the salaries available. A recent survey by "Better Roads" found that 69% believe finding good people a major problem, 37% believe it is their toughest problem, and 52% view keeping good employees as a major problem. Other problems that surfaced in the survey were unionization, inadequate budgets, interference from politicians, and too much paperwork. Most maintenance managers responding to the survey believe that experience in the department is the best training for their position. Quotes from many county and state highway maintenance managers who responded to the survey are included in this article.
