NEW DECK, NEW ROLE FOR STEEL TRUSSS BRIDGE
A neglected steel truss bridge, King Bridge across the Mississippi at St Louis, built in 1949, is being renewed with a new deck, new paint, new structural steel where needed, and a new role in urban commuting. The 14-month project includes the complete removal of the existing bridge deck and replacement with a new deck, and cast-in-place and concrete-filled steel grid; removal and replacement of exterior stringers, and floorbeams; removal of 5 spans; repair of other spans; a new drainage system; removal of lead based paint; and installation of all new deck expansion joints. Details of the work are briefly summarized.
