DOT CAPTURES ACCIDENTS, REPAIR PROJECTS ON FILM

The article describes how photography plays a key role in documentation at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, recording accident sites, and helping in bridge inspections. The DOT uses transparencies and prints to doucment projects and illustrate reports. Photographic records are made of specific road-related problems and documents the installation of new materials or proceduress designed to solve the problem. These records enable the determination of which methods provide the best results. With the loss of sovereign immnunity and the formation of a risk management department, 35 mm cameras have been used to document accident sites. The pictures are taken to court and are essential in determining whether the state is at fault. Cameras have also been used to record a historic truss bridge necessitating replacement.
