COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPORTATION MODELS: CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS AND FUTURE TRENDS

This is an overview of the uses that CTM (comprehensive transportation models) have served, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Areas where there have been significant advances in CTM technology, and where further advances are anticipated are identified. These advances are having an effect on planning in urban and regional/national transportation fields. This article attempts to identify the developments and future trends. The advantages and the disadvantages of the land use/transportation system (LUTS) and UTPP (urban transportation planning process) are discussed. It is noted that CTM may be used as a framework for thinking through the traffic effects of a project. Conclusions drawn from the study are presented.
