BRITISH EROSION ANALYZED
It is described how a computer geographic information system devised to analyze the causes of erosion along 800 miles of the English east coast, is expected to produce immediate savings and help resolve a serious problem along 70% of the coast. A mapping information system software package was adapted to analyze many different sets of how a coast is working and what is causing erosion. The system can project the results of various courses of action. Nineteen major data sets, some with subsets were compiled. The information was entered into a relational data base linked to geographical information, thus giving a computer tool for the management, construction and design of sea defenses. It is suggested that the system could have wide applications, especially in Florida.
