DETENTION POND SIZING FOR MULTIPLE RETURN PERIODS
A desk-top method is developed for sizing detention ponds and outlet facilities for multiple return periods. The method allows a nonlinear relationship between the pond storage and the water level. A family of charts is presented that can be used directly, without a lengthy trial-and-error routing procedure. The desk-top method is based on the reservoir pool-routing technique. The hydrologic storage equation is coupled with expressions describing the flow through and over the outlet structures. The resulting differences are solved using a finite difference scheme. However, since the analysis is carried out in terms of carefully chosen dimensionless parameters, the results can be generalized and presented very conveniently in chart form.
