I-235 AND I-80/I-35. DES MOINES AREA FREEWAY SYSTEM STUDY. REPORT 3 - DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF RECONSTRUCTION PLAN FOR I-235

Interstate Highways I-80, I-35 and I-235 are the backbone of the Des Moines area transportation system. A large portion of traffic through and within the metropolitan area uses one or more of these major facilities. A comprehensive study of the Des Moines area freeway system, encompassing 43 miles of rural, urban and suburban freeway, was conducted. The objectves were: (1) To systematically assess the location, extent and nature of the full range of physical, geometric and operational conditions on the freeway system; (2) To develop refined traffic forecasts for the year 2010 from Iowa DOT computer forecasts; (3) To develop a long range plan for the existing freeway system, such plan to address both existing problems and traffic needs for the year 2010; and (4) To recommend a staged approach by which freeway improvements are implemented in a systematic fashion. This report documents work peforrmed under Phase III of the project. The report describes detailed design, cost and impact evaluations of the alternatives for I-235 only. The work presented here is intended to assist the Iowa DOT in decision-making for specific improvements to the I-235 corridor.
