REAL-TIME INTERSECTION SIMULATION WITH COMPUTER GRAPHICS DISLAYS

This study examined the feasibility of developing a simulation program to generate traffic flow patterns and measurements of signal network performance, using a graphical display to convey information in a meaningful, understandable way. Operating interactively and in real time would allow the user to make changes in the parameters defining the network and immediately observe the results. Existing simulation/graphics programs were reviewed to determine their suitability in a real time interactive environment. Two models ("Texas" and "gtraf") appeared to be potentially suitable but lacked certain key features. The requirements for developing an entirely new system were studied, and it was concluded that such a system would be feasible. Hardware and software requirements were outlined and an implementation program prepared. The development of a limited demonstration system was recommended to assess the utility of the model and provide guidelines for future expansion. (a)
