ALBERTA CONCRETE PATCH EVALUATION PROGRAM
A test program was conducted over a period of about 15 months on commercial concrete patching products to evaluate their relative performance in severe exposure conditions. The program was divided into three phases. Phase 1 consisted of physical properties determination on 22 products in addition to the 24 products already tested by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation in 1984. Phase 2 and 3 accelerated failure tests consisted of applying patches to precast deck slabs for 16 patching products and failing these by exposure to severe weathering conditions. Relative performance of patching products was determined on patches with different shapes and different types of surface preparation. The test results revealed that the relative ranking of products based on certain physical properties did not always predict the relative performance of patching products under simulated field conditions. The tests also indicated that corrosion of top reinforcing bars accompanied by impact loads play a more significant role in patching products failure than freeze-thaw salt scaling cycles accompanied by cycles of soaking and drying at elevated temperatures.
