PAVEMENT SURFACE CONDITION RATING SYSTEMS

The purpose of this guide is to provide a pavement rating system which can be incorporated into pavement management systems and which has a high degree of aceptability across Canada. A literature review and a survey of current practice across Canada were used to identify and describe systems presently in use. In general, there are four attributes which can initiate the need for rehabilitative activity: 1) roughness or ride quality, 2) surface distress, 3) structural capacity, and 4) skid resistance. The majority of the report describes detailed procedures for the identification and evaluation of various surface distress manifestations. These can be classified into three general subgroups: surface defects, surface deformation and cracking. The identification and ranking of these distresses would form the basis for an overall pavement condition rating system.
