DEVELOPMENT OF A GROUND RESISTIVITY TECHNIQUE FOR LOCATING BURIED GRANULAR DEPOSITS

This study was undertaken to evaluate and develop inductive ground resistivity techniques for identifying and mapping buried granular deposits. The methodology was tested at a site in southern Ontario that was expected to contain a buried granular deposit. Conventional granular investigation methods undertaken at the test site prior to and during the study were unsuccessful in delineating the extent of buried granular deposit. Based on the results of the resistivity surveys, 31 test hole locations were selected. The results of the test drilling program substantiated the predictions made regarding the soil types expected from the resistivity survey results. Therefore, the inductive resistivity surveys were successful in delineating areas of granular material potential. In addition, a user manual detailing the methodology has been prepared for use by ministry personnel (see IRRD 807098).
