DRIVE FOR CLEAN AIR: NATURAL GAS AND METHANOL VEHICLES

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the environmental benefits, economic value and practical applications of methanol and natural gas. The following questions are addressed: How far have research, development and commercialization progressed on vehicles burning methanol or natural gas? What is the record of vehicles using these fuels for environmental and mechanical performance, cost, and safety? How available and reliable are sources of methanol and natural gas, and how long will they last? What steps have federal, state, and local government leaders taken to promote the use of these fuels? How do governmental efforts in the U.S. compare with the programs to promote use of the alternative fuels in countries such as New Zealand, Canada and Australia? Conclusions are drawn concerning the potential role both fuels may play under various conditions, and measures government and private enterprise can take to promote their appropriate uses in urban areas are identified.
