PERFORMANCE OF CHLORINATED-RUBBER TRAFFIC PAINT. FINAL REPORT
Based on promising performance in earlier tests, 90,000 gal of chlorinated-rubber (CR) traffic paint were installed by Region 4 (Rochester) striping crews in 1987. This material appeared to offer 12-month durability, unlike the Department's standard modified alkyd (MA) traffic paint. This report documents performance of nearly 300 miles of test lines installed by Regions 1 (Albany) and 4, compared to matching sections of MA traffic paint. The only area of concern during installation was the longer no-track time of CR paint, requiring increased traffic protection measures to protect wet lines from vehicles. It would appear that CR is capable of providing year-round delineation under typical conditions, on most New York roadways currently requiring traffic paint. However, it may require a second restriping of some lines to achieve this goal and continued observation of CR paint performance is necessary to identify those combinations of traffic, roadway, and climatic conditions under which CR is not capable of providing 12-month durability.
