STATE OF ALASKA PUBLIC BUILDING INVENTORY ANALYSIS
A statistical analysis of the State of Alaska's public owned buildings reveals a geographical distribution of buildings as well as distributions by size and use category. This study was conducted to direct research activities toward the creation of a thermal standard for public buildings. The analysis was based on building inventory and property databases of the State of Alaska. Additional information came from local governments in the Anchorage area. The study revealed that 86% of all buildings listed in the building inventory are small buildings. The majority of square footage, 14,250,000 sq ft (representing 80% of the state's floor space), is in large buildings. Most buildings in Alaska were educational, residential, office and transportation facilities, based on total building square footage in use. Further, the study presents the distribution of building size in increments of 5,000 sq ft in each of seven climatic regions, and for the four major categories of building use. This distribution shows that western Alaska contains many of the buildings smaller than 10,000 sq ft, and that many large buildings are situated in southcentral Alaska.
