OVERVIEW OF AUTOMOBILE NAVIGATION SYSTEMS AND POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

Integrated automobile navigation systems blending various combinations of radio location, dead-reckoning, cartographic and computer technologies are emerging which will have significant, but as yet largely unexplored, impacts on road transportation systems. This paper gives an overview of both the technology and potential application of these systems, including dead-reckoning systems, and those based on electronic sign posts, loran c and satellites for positional information. On-board computer, data storage and display technology are also discussed, as well as human factor considerations. Examples of past, present and future systems are presented.
