TILT TABLE DESIGN MANUAL

This report describes a tilt table designed and built for transport Canada. This table is a test apparatus composed of a laterally tilting platform on which heavy trucks are driven and tilted in order to determine their rollover threshold. The report describes the design of the structure, the hydraulic and electrical systems and the weighing pads. The structure has been designed to accept all the heavy trucks currently allowed to run on Canadian roads. The table is comprised of two sections, each consisting of a base and tilting platform. Each platform is tilted by two synchronized hydraulic cylinders. The hydraulic pump is driven by an internal combustion engine which makes the unit self-sufficient. The electrical circuit comprises, in addition to the basic elements, a series of switches acting on the hydraulic valves in order to maintain the synchronisation of the four hydraulic cylinders. Recommendations are made for the design of future tilt tables.
