CONTROL OF DAMPING IN VEHICLE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS
The author examines the two functions of the shock absorber: to control the movements of the car body and to limit the movement of the wheels which governs the adhesion between tyres and road surface. Vehicle suspensions determine the stability and enduring quality of a vehicle and also the tyre adhesion, and efficient suspensions depend on the quality of the shock absorber. Checks for shock absorber wear are described and thus stated that these should be carried out at the resonant frequency of the wheel and tyre system. Results of tests performed an in-service vehicles have to be correlated with those on vehicles known to be in good condition. It is pointed out that temperature has a great effect on shock absorber performance. The author concludes that although existing checks show the variation between new and worn shock absorbers, they cannot judge whether suspension damping is accurate from the safety angle, and there is a need for a check which provided an objective evaluation of a safety criterion.
