STATEMENT ON TRANSPORT IN LONDON. THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S APPROACH TOWARDS THE OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF LONDON'S TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

This publication explains the United Kingdom secretary of state's approach towards the operation and development of london's transport systems. It also describes the action that is being promoted and encouraged to meet the present transport challenges and to lay sound foundations for the next century. The objective of the approach is that london's transport systems should respond to the demands that are placed upon them in ways which are safe, efficient, and have proper respect for the environment. Particular emphasis is given to catering to the needs of the elderly and the disabled. Sections are provided on: a ) present traffic patterns, trends, and prospects for future demand; b) present road network and rail programmes; c) policy framework; d) future plans; and e) conclusions. Appendices provide further details on: a) arrangements for disabled people; b) public transport safety; c) investment on London underground and network southeast; c) taxis; d) river transport; e) road safety; f) coach parking; g) cyclists and pedestrians; h) road pricing; i) investment criteria; and J) generated road demand for road traffic.
