SCREENING THE NOISE SCREEN. A STUDY INTO THE EXPERIENCE OF NOISE SCREEN BY THE ROAD USER
SCHERM IN BEELD. EEN ONDERZOEK NAAR DE BELEVING VAN GELUID WERENDE VOORZIENINGEN DOOR DE WEGGEBRUIKER
The department of aesthetic design of the Dutch Ministry of Transport is responsible for the evaluation of the design of noise screens along motorways and their visual qualities. A study was made of road users' opinions of these screens after their construction along motorways. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to ascertain what the road user thinks of the different kinds of noise screens; and (2) in how far the starting points of the designer are experienced as such by the road user. The object of the study was therefore related to the different kinds of noise screens and the starting points of the designer. Six types of noise screens were selected for a more detailed research. The appraisal of the noise screens by the road user was mostly negative. Only one noise screen elicted a positive response.
