HAZARDOUS MATERIALS. FEDERAL TRAINING FOR FIRST RESPONDERS TO HIGHWAY AND RAILROAD INCIDENTS

This Fact Sheet identifies the federal agencies that provide first-responder training to state and local personnel who are the first to respond to highway and rail accidents involving hazardous materials, presents data on federal expenditure on such training in recent years, and discusses the nature of federal first-responder training activities. The federal agencies providing training are: the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Energy, and the following units of the Department of Transportation: Research and Special Programs Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the United States Coast Guard.
