THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCOMPANYING MINERALS IN STABILIZED SOILS ---PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRWESS, INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY, 20-25 OCTOBER 1986, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA. VOLUMES 1, 2 AND 3.

IMPORTANCE DES MINERAUX ACCESSOIRES DANS LA TERRE STABILISEE

Building requirements, costs of traditional construction and lack of materials lead to the development of stabilized earth. Simply compacted or stabilized, earth blocks are very interesting. Stabilized soils, can reach strengths exceeding 5,0 mpa on dried samples and 2,0 mpa on saturated samples. The treatment improves the strength and reduces the water susceptibility. Nevertheless, the treatment does not improve all kinds of soils. The purpose of this work is to draw attention to the fact that a subsidiary component (less than 3 percent), may ruin the positive effects of a treatment. Therefore, the authors emphasize the necessity of achieving a complete analysis of the material which is the only way of finding out the components which might inhibit the reaction. For instance, a low percentage of pyrite in a soil (less than 3%) induces a drop of 50 percent of the initial value of compressive strength and completely cancels the water resistance of saturated samples. These results, which have been found on different types of soil, put an end to the utilization of materials including pyrite, or limit their application to structures well protected against water.
