CONCRETE BRIDGE ENGINEERING: PERFORMANCE AND ADVANCES. CHAPTER 8. PRESTRESSED PRECAST CONCRETE BRIDGES

This chapter reviews the design, construction and analysis of prestressed precast concrete bridge decks, and provides details of current developments in this field in some detail. Future trends are also suggested. Bridge substructures are not included. The materials used in construction are discussed briefly, as are methods of analysis. Construction details of some notable United Kingdom bridges are also provided, together with a description of precast bridge beam types. Design criteria are discussed in more detail as are the various bridge structure types such as solid slab, beam and slab, voided slab, frame, girder, box arch, and cabled stayed bridges. The use of precast concrete infill slab, beam and slab, and box bridges is also described. Finally, special problems in bridge design such as half joints and continuity are discussed.
