DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ASPHALT CONCRETE FOR HEAVY LOADS ---EXPO ON ASPHALT; 7TH AAPA INTERNATIONAL ASPHALT CONFERENCE, BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, 7-11 AUGUST 1988.

The United States army Corps of Engineers has been faced with steadily increasing aircraft loads and tyre pressures since their extensive involvement with construction of military airfields in world war II. This paper reviews some of the steps that the Corps of Engineers has had to take to design and build asphalt concrete pavements to withstand these growing loads. As loads and tyre pressure increase, an increasingly stable asphalt mix has been needed, and this has been accomplished by tightened material requirements and updated mix design methods. The resulting stiff mixes cause construction problems, and experienced contractors with the proper equipment and construction techniques are needed to mix and place these materials. Recent experience with reduced pay specifications have improved the quality of construction, and the Corps of Engineers plans to expand their use in the future (a).
