ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS BASED ON THEIR COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE --PROCEEDINGS OF THE FOURTH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA, HELD CAPE SUN HOTEL, CAPE TOWN, REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA, 12-16 MARCH 1984. VOL 1 & VOL 2.

In order to assess the comparative performance of different bituminous surfacings, fifteen test sections were constructed on a national highway in the moderate rainfall area near New Delhi in 1971. Since proper selection of the grade of bitumen for bituminous surfacing was considered equally essential, three different grades of bitumen were also included in the study. Sections were periodically evaluated for their performance. This paper reports the details of the test sections, their performance over a period of ten years and the analysis of the performance data. The life of surfacings is analysed with reference to load repetitions, cost and their relative bitumen requirements. The findings indicate that the number of repetitions to failure for rolled asphalt mixes are about three times that of open surfacings. Dense mixes with harder grade bitumen can withstand a higher number of load repetitions in comparison to softer grade bitumen. However, no differences were observed for coarse mixes. Based on fifteen year life cycle costing, dense surfacings with 30/40 bitumen work out to be about 5-10% cheaper than 80/100 bitumen. The bitumen requirement worked out to be lowest for dense asphaltic concrete.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815702.
