PROPERTIES AND SITE CONTROL OF BITUMEN RUBBER ASPHALT IN SOUTH AFRICA --PROCEEDINGS OF THE FOURTH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA, HELD CAPE SUN HOTEL, CAPE TOWN, REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA, 12-16 MARCH 1984. VOL 1 & VOL 2.

Bitumen-rubber is a product most suitable to act as stress relieving membranes, crack filling material, waterproofing membranes and binders for asphalt in certain specialized applications. As the product is relatively expensive it is important that it performs as expected. Many research workers have suggested tests to measure certain properties of bitumen-rubber only but a limited amount of work has been done to establish actual criteria for testing the material. This paper describes a procedure followed to correlate binder properties with fatigue characteristics and thereby to establish test criteria. Properties such as ring and ball softening point, resiliency, flow and viscosity are related to the laboratory performance of the bitumen-rubber binder, and criteria are suggested for these properties. Feedback from experimental sections constructed on national route 1 near Somerset West will assist in the improvement of these preliminary specifications. Predictive equations were developed to determine by means of simple physical tests on the bitumen-rubber binder, the percentage of rubber used as well as the time the bitumen and rubber were allowed to react. The coefficients of these predictive equations were determined using the data from the research programme and slight adjustments to these coefficients will be necessary should other types of bitumen and rubber be used. Research is continuing to determine the effect of different types and grades of rubber and bitumen in order to increase the reliability of the predictive equations. At the present time, however, it is recommended that the suggested testing techniques be employed to evaluate bitumen-rubber.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815702.
