EMERGENCY WATER INJECTION SYSTEM FOR THE NS SAVANNAH

This report presents the findings of an investigation into the loss of coolant accidents which have been evolved for the N.S. Savannah. Its ultimate purpose is the design of an emergency water injection system to make up water to the primary system when no power is available on board the ship. The results indicate that such a system can be installed and is capable of utilizing some of the present equipment. If planned in the beginning stages of core design, a better spray arrangement can be made. The greatest hinderance to the system is that the injection system will only operate when the ship is in a vertical or near vertical position. Calculations are given for the emergency injection flow needed to remove the decay heat and safety factors were added to these flows to allow for uncertainties in flow distribution that result from arrangement limitations.
