TRANSIT, URBAN LIFE AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE SUNBELT. FROM THE BOOK TRANSIT, LAND USE & URBAN FORM

The following are key steps in the transit/land use planning process. First, develop a comprehensive plan that integrates transit goals with highway, land development, infrastructure and open space agendas. It must all relate comprehensively. Second, create a 20-year political commitment. It is not easy. Do not expect it to be unanimous. Third, the private sector must be involved. Real estate developers understand the impact of rapid transit, but the broader private sector must be involved as well. To a certain extent, especially at this time in history, rapid transit is an economic development issue. It may be as related to jobs as it is to transportation.
