SCHEDULING AN URBAN RAILWAY. FROM THE BOOK COMPUTER SCHEDULING OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT
High-capacity urban railway systems demand an operational plan which optimises the use and control of trains and crews. Creation of the plan, or timetable, is a highly complex, protracted and labour intensive task. Investigation into the application of computer technology to compiling work led to the successful development within London Transport of the Computer Aided Railway Timetabling system. This has already proved to be a powerful tool for achieving most of the tasks tackled from timetable conception to completion. As a conversational system, CART in fact enables the compiler to determine the best service pattern options more quickly and to enhance his productivity and skills in the art of compilation. The package is destined to become integral with the total system for processing time and duty schedule.
