DEVELOPMENT OF EQUIPMENT FOR EVALUATING PAVEMENTS USING CONTACTLESS SENSORS --BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND, SEPTEMBER 16-18, 1986
Existing equipment, such as the pavement deflection data logging equipment (pddle) and falling weight deflectometer, and survey condition procedures such as March and chart are either slow and non-continuous in their operation, or, to be used effectively require a considerable input of manpower. This paper describes developments with the use of contactless sensors to monitor pavement surface characteristics and video systems to record and store a visual description of the pavement surface and provide inventory information. The use of contactless sensors and video equipment allows survey vehicles to travel at the speed of the normal traffic flow reducing survey time, minimising disruption to traffic and reducing significant danger to survey personnel. The equipment described provides a cost effective alternative to current evaluation procedures.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815528.
