This paper discusses some of the advances in the understanding of the behaviour of pavement materials made through testing with the heavy vehicle simulator of more than thirty full scale test sections constructed throughout South Africa. Emphasis is placed on the behaviour of granular, cemented and bituminous materials, and particularly on the deterioration of these materials with time and with load repetitions.
