Over the last ten years the analytical method using falling weight deflection (fwd) test results, in combination with the bisar computer program has become common practice for airport pavement evaluation and overlay design. However far too often such an investigation is only initiated when it has become obvious that major maintenance or complete rehabilitation of the pavements is required. Due to budget restraints the calculated required overlay thicknesses are often reduced once strengthening has to be implemented, and hardly ever is the rehabilitation followed up by a second evaluation of the newly rehabilitated pavement. Thus information on the extent to which the predicted bearing strength has become reality after rehabilitation is not obtained, and the resulting report is shelved without making use of its potential as a pavement management tool. This paper describes the results of two such pavement evaluations, one before and one after the rehabilitation of the main runway of maastricht airport in the Netherlands. Although of limited scope a comparison of results of the two evaluations as well as in-field tests have verified that the results of the analytical method are in line with reality. Finally, it is shown how the information obtained can be used for the implementation of a "yearly bookkeeping system" of used-up pavement life.
