BINDER REQUIREMENTS FOR PERVIOUS AND IMPERVIOUS MATERIALS --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985

In the United Kingdom macadam surfacings have traditionally been used on the minor sections of the road network and impervious rolled asphalt surfacings on the most heavily-trafficked roads. Concern about spray from vehicles on wet impervious surfacings has led to the development of pervious macadams for the higher intensity sites. The requirements of a binder for these two types of surfacings are very different and often conflicting. For example, in order to maintain adequate surface texture on impervious surfacings it is necessary to have a binder which oxidises, enabling the mortar to be slowly abraded by traffic; for the pervious surfacings, however, the long-term integrity of the binder bond between the particles of aggregate is essential for the surfacing to be durable. Other properties of binders relevant to the performance of the two types of material are discussed in detail.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
