BINDER FOAMING FOR DIRECT MANUFACTURE OF SPECIAL HOT MIXES --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985

MOUSSAGE DE LIANTS ET PRODUCTION DIRECTE D'ENROBES SPECIAUX

The severe quality standards for the road industry have led to the development of modified asphalts thus obtaining high performing hot-mixes, especially when speaking of fatigue and rutting resistance. These binders are obtained in particular from polymer addition. The improved performance characteristics of these binders are imparted to the resulting boosted hot mixes; thinner road layers may be generally applied in comparison with those currently used. However, in spite of this, these hot mixes may not be selected because of their manufacturing cost. The present report describes an original and inexpensive way of manufacturing special hot mixes: both productions of additivated asphalt and related hot mix are obtained in a single operation. This process, presently designed for conventional hot mixing plants or drum-mixers, consists of an in-line introduction of the additive -as an acqueous dispersion -in the bitumen pipe. The expansion at the end of the pipe results in the obtaining of a foamed blend, the blend being composed of bitumen and polymer. The aggregates are dried, heated and immediately coated, not with a liquid additive/bitumen blend, but with this foamed binder just formed. Due to the foam state of the binder and its resulting considerable apparent volume and low viscosity, an excellent coating of the material is obtained. The technique of foam coating is of great interest as it permits the immediate obtaining of standard products and also hot mixes boosted with elastomers, taking into account quality requirements and price parameters.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
