AMELIORATION DES MATERIAUX BITUMINEUX PAR INCORPORATION DE POLYOLEFINES CHIMIQUEMENT MODIFIEES
A special type of bituminous premix can be obtained from a mixture of hydrocarbon and polyolefin binder partially joined by covalent bonds. The method of preparation is also described. Incorporating polymers in bitumens, coal tars and hydrocarbon binders in general has been done in many industrial applications. Many patents and much research concern the incorporation of polymers, modified and straight copolymers, pvc and polypropylene in the formulations for premix, coatings and emulsions. The most popular material has been straight and modified polyethylene. The choice of this polyolefin was justified by the improvement in mechanical properties and the reduction in thermal susceptibility of the mixes. However, there was always a serious increase in the viscosity of the resulting binders and a loss of blending after prolonged storage. To overcome these drawbacks, the polyolefin was activated (linear, high-density, low-density, first run and reused polyethylene) by two methods: (1) -electronic or gamma-ray bombardment on the polyolefin in an oxygen-free atmosphere, followed by exposure to oxygen, or (2) -combined action of ozone and oxygen on the polyolefin, producing peroxides and hydroperoxides. The macromolecular peroxides and hydroperoxides are mixed with a hydrocarbon binder to obtain binders ready for use or for incorporation in the bitumen/aggregate mix to produce premix. In the first case, there is a substantial reduction in the viscosity of the peo3-bitumen mix as compared with straight pe-bitumen, better storability (measured by the ball test at the top and bottom of a suitable sample) and substantially improved bond with quartzite. In the second case, the mixes obtained with peo3 bitumen exhibit greater compaction, greater penetration of binder in the aggregate, lower water absorption and better workability (as demonstrated by the gyratory shear press) than premixes without the pe-bitumen mix.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
