POLYMER - MODIFIED BITUMEN - REQUIREMENTS --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985

BITUMES MODIFIES PAR DES POLYMERES, EXIGENCES

The technological properties of polymer-modified bitumen depend on the type, amount and properties of the base bitumen, polymers and additions used, as well as the processes employed in the preparation and application of the formulations. In order to properly evaluate the technical constructional properties of polymer-modified bitumen, additional tests and assessments are required as supplements to conventional test methods. In this case the meaningfulness of the results of conventional tests such as penetration, ring and ball softening-point, ductility and fraass breaking point is limited, as supplements to these conventional test methods, the present paper describes and discusses additional test methods for determining the homogeneity and hot storage stability, for detecting alterations due to thermal stress, for measuring rheological characteristic values with a sliding-plate rheometer and for evaluating fatigue behaviour by means of a dynamic creep test, using examples from actual practice. For the proper evaluation of the technical application properties of polymer-modified bitumen, specific requirements for homogeneity, hot storage stability, alterations due to thermal stress, adhesive strength, temperature sensitivity, deformation recovery and fatigue behaviour are postulated and substantiated.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
