THE RECYCLING OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS ON ITALIAN MOTORWAYS --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985
In the field of pavement recycling, research and application have followed in one another's footsteps for the past five years at autostrade spa. This activity has served as a catalyzer for ideas and the creation of operational machinery, intervention systems, design and project methodology, and material controls. Presently in Italy, both the on-site and in-laboratory recycling methods are utilized. Recent developments in recycling machinery have made it possible to apply to the machinery many of those characteristics till now found on the "in-house" machinery (drying drums, mixing drums). In both procedures, the materials are extracted with gigantic milling machines which shred the existing pavement with great velocity. The techniques and materials used in the regeneration of the binding agents are almost identical. The article lists the various machinery and equipment presently used in highway maintenance in Italy. Particular attention is paid to the different construction techniques and the results obtained. The technical instructions written up for the machinery presently in operation and under construction, as well as techniques relating to quality control procedures, are also dealt with. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
